Christopher Pearse Cranch was a painter of the Hudson River School, a poet and Transcendentalist. He gave this painting to Emerson in 1875.

On September 14, 1835 Emerson married Lydia Jackson in the parlor of Winslow House in her hometown of Plymouth, MA. They went on to have four children and 47 years of marriage.
